Nangma Valley Trek: 2027 All-Inclusive

The Nangma Valley Trek is a 12-day, 11-night trip from Islamabad into the Nangma Valley above Kanday in Baltistan, to the base camp meadows at about 3,950 m under the granite of Amin Brakk (about 5,850 m).

The Nangma Valley

Nangma is a side valley of the Hushe region, a green trough of meadows walled by some of the biggest granite towers in the Karakoram. Climbers call it the Yosemite of Pakistan. For trekkers it is one of the gentlest ways into big-mountain country: short days, no glacier crossings, and camps where shepherds still graze their flocks.

What to expect

The highest point is 4,500 m, so altitude counts here. The itinerary is built around acclimatising and your guide sets a pace that gets you there comfortably.

You’re ready ifyou walk or hike now and then and can manage a few hours uphill with a day pack.
Give yourself a little longer ifit has been a while since a long walk. A few hill walks beforehand and you will enjoy it far more.
This might not be your trip ifyou would rather not sleep in a tent, or you want a glacier crossing or a high pass. Tell us and we will match you to the right one.

One thing we do insist on: travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.

We meet you at the airport and take you to the hotel. In the evening your trek leader runs the briefing: gear check, the Skardu flight plan and how the days on the trail are paced.

Day 2

Fly to Skardu

2,230 m

A 45-minute mountain flight past Nanga Parbat when the weather allows. If the flight is cancelled we drive the Karakoram Highway instead and use the spare day at the end. Afternoon free in Skardu.

Day 3

Skardu: rest and gear check

2,230 m

A day to acclimatise before going higher. Walk up to Kharpocho Fort or out to the Manthal Buddha Rock, buy last snacks in the bazaar and repack for the trail.

Day 4

Drive to Khaplu

~2,600 m

About three hours east along the Indus and Shyok rivers. In the afternoon, Khaplu Palace and the Chaqchan Mosque. Night in Khaplu.

Day 5

Kanday to Mingulu Broq

~3,500 m

A short jeep ride to Kanday (about 3,000 m), the last village, where the porters load up. Then about four hours on foot through fields and Balti hamlets, over wooden bridges, to the meadow camp at Mingulu Broq.

Day 6

Into the Nangma Valley

~3,950 m

A steady climb into the upper valley. The granite starts here: Amin Brakk, Shingu Charpa and the towers around them rise straight out of the meadows. Camp at the Nangma base camp meadows.

Day 7

Day hike to Amin Brakk base camp

~4,500 m

Up to the base camp under Amin Brakk (about 5,850 m), the Great Tower of Pakistan, then back down to Nangma for the night. Steeper than the days before, and optional if you would rather rest at camp.

Day 8

Trek out to Kanday

~3,000 m

Downhill most of the way, about five hours, back to Kanday. Night in a village guesthouse or camp.

2,230 m

Down the Hushe road and through Khaplu to Skardu, for a hot shower and a hotel bed.

Day 12

Depart

Transfer to the airport for your flight home.

Why Karakoram Venture

Because the people who take you up this mountain are from it. Our guides grew up in these valleys, and they are our own team — not a booking desk handing you to whoever is cheapest that week. Every one of them holds a guide licence from DTS Gilgit-Baltistan and the Federal DTS, renewed each year, and worked at least five years in the region before applying for it. Most also hold Wilderness First Aid.

Because the safety is real, and we will name it rather than imply it. A satellite phone travels in every camp, we hold established helicopter-rescue contacts for this region, and we tell you exactly which travel insurance to carry. Budget operators cut precisely these things, because you cannot see them on a web page.

Because the price is honest. Local infrastructure is why $1,590 per person covers the trip from Islamabad rather than a stripped-down base rate. Exactly what it includes — and the handful of things it does not — is set out above.
