The Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek is a guided trip lasting 7 days in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan, topping out at 3,300 m. It is graded Moderate — 2–3 days on foot. 4 fixed departures are open from $980 per person, all-inclusive from Islamabad.
Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek — 2027 All-Inclusive 7 Days
The Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek is the finest short adventure in the Karakoram — a 7-day journey from Islamabad up into the Hunza-Nagar valley and on to the green meadow of Tagaphari (around 3,300 m), face to face with the 7,788 m wall of Rakaposhi. It is a moderate walk with no glacier crossings and no technical climbing, which makes it the perfect first Karakoram trek for newcomers and families. You acclimatize among the apricot orchards and old forts of Hunza, climb from pine forest into raw alpine ice in a single morning, and stand on the famous high “cricket ground” beneath one of the greatest unbroken mountain walls on Earth. Guided start to finish by a local Balti and Burushaski-speaking team, with a sat phone in camp and a rescue plan that actually exists. Local hands, real safety, fair price.

Graded Moderate.
What to expect
The highest point is 3,300 m. Most people feel nothing worse than short breath up there, and the pace is set to keep it that way.
One thing we do insist on: travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.

Itinerary — Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek

Seven days from Islamabad to the foot of Rakaposhi: acclimatize in Hunza, drive to the Minapin trailhead, then climb from forest to alpine ice and the famous high meadow at Tagaphari.

2,500 m
Fly to Gilgit (weather permitting) or drive the legendary Karakoram Highway, then on to Karimabad in Hunza. Settle in beneath Rakaposhi and Ultar Sar.
Day 2Hunza Acclimatization & Forts
2,800 m
An easy acclimatization day: sunrise at Eagle's Nest, the 700-year-old Baltit and Altit forts, and the turquoise of Attabad Lake. Light walking to ready the legs.
Day 3Drive to Minapin
2,000 m
A short drive across to Minapin village in Nagar, the trailhead. Meet your trek crew, check kit, and take an orientation walk through the apricot orchards.
Day 4Trek: Minapin to Hapakun
2,800 m
The trek begins. Climb steadily through pine and juniper forest — the steepest, sweatiest stretch, about 3 hours and 800 m of ascent to the grassy shelf of Hapakun. Camp as the Hunza-Nagar valleys open up below.
Day 5Hapakun to Rakaposhi Base Camp (Tagaphari)
3,300 m
A shorter, kinder 2-3 hour climb to Tagaphari — the broad meadow everyone calls Rakaposhi Base Camp. Rakaposhi (7,788 m) rears up ahead, Diran Peak (7,266 m) to the right, the Minapin Glacier grinding below. Afternoon on the famous high “cricket ground.”
Day 6Sunrise, then descend to Hunza
2,000 m
Watch first light burn across the wall of Rakaposhi, then descend to Minapin and drive back to Hunza for a hot shower and a proper bed. Celebrate the summit view with the crew.

Why Karakoram Venture
Because the people who take you up this mountain are from it. Our guides grew up in these valleys, and they are our own team — not a booking desk handing you to whoever is cheapest that week. Every one of them holds a guide licence from DTS Gilgit-Baltistan and the Federal DTS, renewed each year, and worked at least five years in the region before applying for it. Most also hold Wilderness First Aid.
Because the safety is real, and we will name it rather than imply it. A satellite phone travels in every camp, we hold established helicopter-rescue contacts for this region, and we tell you exactly which travel insurance to carry. Budget operators cut precisely these things, because you cannot see them on a web page.
Because the price is honest. Local infrastructure is why $980 per person covers the trip from Islamabad rather than a stripped-down base rate. Exactly what it includes — and the handful of things it does not — is set out above.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does the Rakaposhi Base Camp Trek cost?
Our 2027 group departures start from $980 per person, all-inclusive — permits, Hunza hotels, camping and meals on the trek, local Balti guides and porters, and ground transport in the north. Private and small-group rates are higher per person; see the pricing table above. No hidden extras at the trailhead.
How long is the trek, and what does the schedule look like?
Seven days, six nights start to finish. That covers travel from Islamabad to Hunza, a Hunza acclimatization day, the drive to Minapin, the 2-3 day trek up to Rakaposhi Base Camp and back, and the return journey.
How hard is it? Do I need trekking experience?
It is a moderate trek — about 1,300 m of ascent with one steep forest section — but there are no glacier crossings and nothing technical. Fit first-timers and families manage it well. It is the trek we recommend before the bigger expeditions.
What is the maximum altitude?
You camp at Tagaphari (Rakaposhi Base Camp) at around 3,300 m. From there Rakaposhi rises to 7,788 m and Diran Peak to 7,266 m directly above you.
When is the best time to trek Rakaposhi?
The season runs mid-April to October. June to September is prime — green meadows, clear mornings and warm days at base camp.
Do I need a permit or NOC?
Rakaposhi is in an open trekking zone, so it generally needs no special NOC. You do need a valid Pakistan tourist visa. We arrange the local park and trek permits for you.
Is it suitable for families and first-time trekkers?
Yes — it is our top pick for both. The short days, lack of technical ground and the dramatic payoff at base camp make it the ideal first Karakoram trek (minimum age 12).
Where does it start and how do I get there?
We start from Islamabad and travel north to Hunza, then across to the Minapin trailhead in Nagar — either by a short flight to Gilgit or along the Karakoram Highway. Both options are built into the itinerary.
How do you handle safety?
Every trip carries a satellite phone, runs with a local Balti and Burushaski-speaking team who know these valleys, and has established helicopter-rescue contacts for the region. We also advise on the right travel insurance. Local hands, real safety, fair price.
