The Baltit & Altit Forts Heritage Day Tour is a guided trip lasting 1 day in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan, topping out at 2,440 m. It is graded Easy — village lanes and fort stairs — village walks and fort stairs. 4 fixed departures are open from $65 per person, all-inclusive from Islamabad.
Baltit & Altit Forts Heritage Day — Both Royal Forts of Hunza, Properly
Most day tours show you one fort. Hunza has two, a short walk apart above Karimabad at about 2,440 m, and they tell one story between them. Altit came first — its Shikari watchtower is around 1,100 years old, the oldest standing monument in Gilgit-Baltistan — and Baltit followed on its 8th-century foundations, rebuilt by Balti craftsmen after a 16th-century royal marriage and restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in the 1990s. We do both, with the old village lanes and apricot orchards between them, under the wall of Ultar Sar (7,388 m). Both fort tickets included — local hands, fair price.

Baltit & Altit Heritage Day Price
From $65 per person in a group of four to six — local guide, transport between Karimabad, Altit village and back, BOTH fort entry tickets and bottled water. Most operators sell the forts one at a time at a similar price; we do the pair, because the story only makes sense together. Royal Garden lunch in Altit at your own cost.

Why Karakoram Venture
Because the people who take you up this mountain are from it. Our guides grew up in these valleys, and they are our own team — not a booking desk handing you to whoever is cheapest that week. Every one of them holds a guide licence from DTS Gilgit-Baltistan and the Federal DTS, renewed each year, and worked at least five years in the region before applying for it. Most also hold Wilderness First Aid.
Because the safety is real, and we will name it rather than imply it. A satellite phone travels in every camp, we hold established helicopter-rescue contacts for this region, and we tell you exactly which travel insurance to carry. Budget operators cut precisely these things, because you cannot see them on a web page.
Because the price is honest. Local infrastructure is why $65 per person covers the trip from Islamabad rather than a stripped-down base rate. Exactly what it includes — and the handful of things it does not — is set out above.

Frequently Asked Questions
How old are Baltit and Altit Forts?
Altit Fort u2014 and especially its Shikari watchtower u2014 is around 1,100 years old, the oldest standing monument in Gilgit-Baltistan. Baltit Fortu2019s foundations are usually dated to about the 8th century CE, with major rebuilding after a 16th-century royal marriage brought Balti master craftsmen to Hunza.
Are the forts restored?
Yes, both u2014 and well. Baltit was restored by the Aga Khan Trust for Culture between 1990 and 1996; Altit reopened in 2007 after a restoration supported by the Government of Norway and won a UNESCO Asia-Pacific Award of Distinction in 2011. Baltit has sat on UNESCOu2019s World Heritage Tentative List since 2004.
How much walking is involved?
A few easy kilometres through Karimabadu2019s lanes and Altitu2019s old village, plus fort stairs. At about 2,440 m the air is noticeably dry and the sun strong, but altitude itself is no concern.
Are both fort tickets really included?
Yes u2014 both entries are in our price, along with the guide and transport between the two. The Royal Garden cafu00e9 lunch under Altitu2019s apricot trees is at your own cost and highly recommended.
When is the best time?
The forts are open year-round. April brings blossom under both forts, October golden poplars; summer afternoons are busiest, so we start at Baltit early.
