Hopper Glacier & Nagar Valley Day Tour

Almost every visitor stays on the Hunza side. Cross into Nagar and the road climbs through terraced villages to Hopar, where the Hopper glacier grinds down past the fields, grey and loud and close enough to hear it crack. Your guide walks you to the moraine edge, and we stop at the Rakaposhi viewpoint coming back.

The Hopper Glacier & Nagar Valley Day Tour is a guided trip lasting 1 day in Gilgit-Baltistan, northern Pakistan. It is graded Easy — a short moraine walk with a guide — moraine viewpoint walk. 3 fixed departures are open from $60 per person, all-inclusive from Islamabad.

Hopper Glacier & Nagar Valley — the Ice Across the River

Hunza and Nagar face each other across one river, and almost every visitor stays on the Hunza side. Cross over and the road climbs through Nagar’s terraced villages to Hopar, about 10 km beyond Nagar Khas, where the Hopper glacier grinds down past the fields, grey and loud and close enough to hear it crack. Your local guide walks you to the moraine edge for the view up the ice toward the Spantik side. On the way back we stop at the Rakaposhi viewpoint by the highway, the nearest you get to a 7,788 m mountain without walking. Local hands, fair price.

Hopper Glacier Day Price

From $60 per person in a group of four to six. That covers the vehicle from your Hunza hotel to Hopar and back, a local guide for the glacier viewpoint walk, the Rakaposhi viewpoint stop and bottled water. Lunch in Hopar is at your own cost. Walking onto the glacier ice itself is not part of the plan; it is unstable, and we stay on the moraine.

Yes — this is one of the easiest trips to say yes to.

Graded Easy — a short moraine walk with a guide.

You’re ready ifyou enjoy a full day out and do not mind some hours on the road.
Give yourself a little longer ifyou would like to feel fresher. A couple of walks beforehand makes the short strolls even easier.
This might not be your trip ifyou are after long days on foot and nights in a tent. Tell us and we will point you at one.

One thing we do insist on: travel insurance that covers helicopter evacuation.

Why Karakoram Venture

Because the people who take you up this mountain are from it. Our guides grew up in these valleys, and they are our own team — not a booking desk handing you to whoever is cheapest that week. Every one of them holds a guide licence from DTS Gilgit-Baltistan and the Federal DTS, renewed each year, and worked at least five years in the region before applying for it. Most also hold Wilderness First Aid.

Because the safety is real, and we will name it rather than imply it. A satellite phone travels in every camp, we hold established helicopter-rescue contacts for this region, and we tell you exactly which travel insurance to carry. Budget operators cut precisely these things, because you cannot see them on a web page.

Because the price is honest. Local infrastructure is why $60 per person covers the trip from Islamabad rather than a stripped-down base rate. Exactly what it includes — and the handful of things it does not — is set out above.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where is the Hopper glacier?

In the Hopar valley of Nagar, about 10 km beyond Nagar Khas, across the Hunza River from Karimabad. The Hopper (Bualtar) glacier flows down right past Hopar village, which makes it one of the most easily reached glaciers in the Karakoram.

Do we walk on the glacier?

No. The ice is covered in loose rock and moves constantly. Your guide takes you to a safe viewpoint on the moraine edge, close enough to hear it crack and see the crevasses, and no further.

How long is the drive from Hunza?

Roughly an hour each way from Karimabad, crossing the Hunza River and climbing through Nagaru2019s villages. The last stretch to Hopar is narrow and slow; we use a vehicle and driver that know it.

What is the Rakaposhi viewpoint?

A roadside spot on the Karakoram Highway in Nagar where the full height of Rakaposhi (7,788 m) rises almost straight above you. It is the closest view you can get to the mountain without trekking, and our stop on the way home.

Can this become a trek?

Yes. Hopar is the trailhead for the Rush Lake trek, and our Rakaposhi Base Camp trek starts from Minapin nearby. If the day leaves you wanting more, ask us about either.
